How we work

How we work.

One question, one partner and one written answer, for a fee fixed before we start. Here is how the six weeks run, what we put in the letter, and what it costs.

First answer

6 weeks, in writing

Who does the work

One partner, start to finish

At a time

Four engagements, one each

The six weeks

Every engagement starts with a diagnostic. This is what happens in it, and what you see each week.

Week 1

We agree the question in one sentence and take it apart on one page: three parts, six hypotheses, the first test for each.

Weeks 2–4

We run the tests in your numbers and on your floor: ERP extracts, invoices, the order book, and a few days in the plant or the sales office. You get a short note every Friday saying which hypotheses are holding up.

Week 5

The partner writes the answer. The other three read it and try to break it before you do.

Week 6

The answer goes to your board in fifteen pages or fewer, with the appendix and a plan for the first 90 days. Then you decide whether you need us for the next part.

What we put in the engagement letter

Five clauses that are in every letter we sign. They answer most of what people ask us in the first meeting.

§ 1

One question per engagement.

We agree it in one sentence before we start, and the answer is judged against that sentence, not against a list of deliverables.

§ 2

The partner you meet does the work.

There are four of us and no associates. The person in the first meeting is the person on your shop floor in week two.

With an appendix that holds every number and how we got it, so your own people can check it and run it again next year.

§ 4

If the work takes longer than we planned, that is our problem, not an invoice.

What we don’t do

Software projects.

We will tell you what the system needs to do, and help you choose who builds it.

Interim management.

A partner sits in your team during implementation, but doesn’t take a line role.

More than four engagements at once.

When we’re full, we say so and give you a start date.

The next engagement in the last meeting.

If you need us again, you’ll know before we do.

Something on your desk? Bring the question, and a partner will reply within two working days.
